Animals Australia Takes a Stand Against Cruel Practices
In a courageous move towards justice for animals, Animals Australia has initiated legal proceedings in the Supreme Court of Victoria to challenge the legality of suffocating pigs inside gas chambers, a practice considered one of the cruelest methods of killing pigs worldwide.
Earlier this year, the Farm Transparency Project’s media exposé uncovered the harrowing final moments of pigs destined for the meat industry. The disturbing footage revealed the intense pain, distress, and prolonged suffering these intelligent animals endure as they suffocate and slowly lose consciousness within cruel carbon dioxide gassing systems. The shocking images, featured in two ABC 7.30 reports, showcased the grim reality for pigs, irrespective of whether they were factory-farmed, free-range, or RSPCA Approved.
Caring Australians, witnessing terrified pigs thrashing in agony and gasping for air, were rightfully appalled, questioning the legality of such practices. After meticulous scrutiny and collaboration with legal experts, Animals Australia has built a case arguing that the current law cannot be met by slaughterhouses employing this cruel gassing method.
This legal action extends beyond Australia, becoming a globally significant test case that will thrust the issue of animal suffering into the spotlight. While changing laws is a formidable and prolonged process, this case is about upholding existing laws that we argue are incompatible with slaughterhouses using the inhumane gassing method. Australians and supporters worldwide are urged to stand with Animals Australia in this pivotal legal battle for the rights and welfare of pigs.

Tackling Plastic Pollution in Indonesia: The Sungai Watch Initiative
In the heart of Indonesia, a young and determined activist named Sam Benchegjib is leading a grassroots movement to combat the growing plastic pollution crisis. With a mission to protect Indonesia’s waterways and marine life, Benchegjib co-founded Sungai Watch, an environmental organisation committed to cleaning up the country’s rivers and preventing plastic waste from reaching the ocean. Indonesia, the second-largest contributor to the global ocean plastic problem, is facing an urgent need for environmental action.
The Issue
Indonesia’s coastal communities have been grappling with the improper disposal of plastic waste, resulting in significant pollution of their water bodies. A shocking 2,000 kilograms (4,400 pounds) of plastic waste per week can flow from a single village into the ocean. The absence of effective plastic waste management in these regions has prompted the Indonesian government to pledge £1 billion to reduce its marine plastic waste by 70% by 2025.
Sungai Watch’s Journey
Back in October 2020, Sam Benchegjib, along with his two siblings, decided to dive headfirst into the wild ride of creating Sungai Watch. Those early days weren’t a walk in the park. They faced many hurdles. From figuring out barrier technology to getting their hands on the right equipment, dealing with staffing headaches, and the not-so-easy task of making their project bigger.
Despite all those challenges, Sam didn’t give up. He kept going with resilience and determination. Fast forward to now, and Sungai Watch isn’t just surviving; it’s evolving. They’re taking on new challenges, tweaking things, and getting better each step of the way. Talk about turning setbacks into setups for success!
Making a Difference
Despite the challenges, Sungai Watch has achieved remarkable milestones in the fight against plastic pollution. Using innovative systems, they have successfully cleaned several of Indonesia’s most polluted rivers and revitalised damaged mangrove ecosystems. To date, they have collected over 1.2 million kilograms (over 2.6 million pounds) of plastic waste from river systems and water bodies.
“I grew up in Indonesia and saw that plastic pollution was getting worse and worse throughout the years,” Benchegjib shared. “I think that’s the beauty of being an entrepreneur and fighting an issue like plastic pollution, where new challenges and variables are always presented to you. This has been a true-life school for us.” ~ Sam Benchegjib
Impact
Sungai Watch’s efforts have led to some heartening success stories. Fish populations have returned to once heavily polluted waterways, and mangrove forests have been revived after the removal of layers of plastic that were suffocating mangrove trees. The organisation’s journey has also involved adapting and learning from their work, such as removing barriers in certain rivers after upstream education and community engagement successfully reduced plastic pollution.

Since its inception, Sungai Watch has grown from a small team of three siblings to a dedicated workforce of 100 full-time staff, all united in their mission to clean up Indonesia’s rivers and protect its environment.

Australia Takes a Bold Step: States Ban Single-Use Plastics
In an exciting move towards a cleaner and greener future, several Australian states are taking a stand against single-use plastics. Beginning in September, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia began rolling out comprehensive bans on various plastic items, from cotton buds to coffee cups, all aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of these pervasive pollutants. This monumental step reflects Australia’s growing commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Bans Unveiled
Queensland: The Sunshine State is taking a giant leap towards environmental conservation. Starting from September 1, Queensland has put a stop to the sale of single-use plastic cotton buds. Additionally, they are saying no to polystyrene packing peanuts and micro beads often found in personal care products. Queensland is also championing the cause by banning “lighter-than-air balloons” and reinforcing regulations on heavyweight plastic shopping bags. The state has introduced a Container Refund Scheme, motivating people to return eligible containers to designated refund points. This scheme has already made a significant impact, with billions of containers collected through various channels, reducing plastic and container litter.
South Australia: South Australia is joining the ranks with a comprehensive ban, which covers single-use plastic plates, bowls, and plastic pizza savers used to keep pizza boxes open. The state is also taking a strong stance against degradable plastics and expanded polystyrene cups and trays, commonly used for raw meat and seafood. South Australia’s ban is a powerful statement of its commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
Western Australia: Western Australia is making its move by starting with single-use plastic cotton buds. The state will further extend the ban to include produce bags, coffee cups, and disposable plastic cup lids. This expansion underscores Western Australia’s dedication to reducing plastic waste in multiple aspects of daily life.
Looking Towards the Future
The commitment of these Australian states to limit single-use plastics is a significant stride towards addressing the environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution. As of September next year, South Australia will continue its efforts by extending the ban to include even more items like plastic produce bags, thick plastic bags used in supermarkets or boutiques, polystyrene plates and containers, plastic confetti, balloon ties, bread tags, takeaway containers, and coffee cups.
Support from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA)
The move to ban single-use plastics has garnered support from the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), the nation’s largest retail body. A recent survey conducted by the ARA found that three-quarters of respondents are in favour of these plastic bans, even if they result in higher costs. ARA CEO Paul Zahra emphasised the retail industry’s commitment to implementing these changes and called for consumers and policymakers to collaborate in making these bans effective, efficient, and cost-effective.
Australia’s ban on single-use plastics in these states marks a significant stride toward a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future. Rescuing Greyhounds: A Beacon of Hope in the Fight Against Illegal Racing
In a shocking revelation, Australian greyhounds are being sold for enormous sums, up to $220,000 each, and sent to China. There, they are used for underground racing, exploiting loopholes in Australia’s rules. ABC Investigations uncovered a mysterious process where these dogs are acquired by Chinese buyers, creating a hidden and concerning industry.
Unveiling the Dark Trade
Australia’s greyhound industry is facing a serious ethical issue. ABC Investigations have found a hidden system where Australian greyhounds are bought by local agents and then sent to China. These dogs, some with impressive backgrounds, are in demand for illegal racing. Wealthy Chinese gamblers are reportedly betting millions on their races, even though gambling is illegal in China.
While sending greyhounds to China is not against the law, it does go against the rules set by racing authorities. State-based greyhound groups have banned the export of racing dogs to China because of concerns about poor treatment. Despite this, the practice continues, and a Senate inquiry is considering a federal government ban on all commercial greyhound exports.
Inside the Operation
In an interview with ABC Investigations, Wang Yungang, an agent in China’s Shangdong province, explained how this secret trade works. He revealed that wealthy Chinese buyers hire agents in both China and Australia to find and bring Australian greyhounds to China. These agents play a vital role, often in secret.
Mr. Wang revealed that these imported greyhounds are mainly used for illegal racing and betting, rather than as pets. Some rich Chinese people reportedly bet huge amounts on these races, sometimes millions of yuan each night.
Exploiting Rules and Facing Challenges
Exporting Australian greyhounds to countries with weaker animal welfare regulations, like China, happens by using legal loopholes in state greyhound rules and limited oversight by the federal government. One major loophole is sending greyhounds to other countries with supposedly good animal welfare standards before they end up in China.
To follow the rules, racing participants must get a “greyhound passport” from Greyhound Australasia, the national organisation. This passport is needed to export racing greyhounds to approved countries like the UK, Ireland, and the United States. Failing to get this passport can lead to legal action and being banned by state racing groups.
Taking Action
As this troubling practice continues, there is a growing need for stronger rules on greyhound exports to protect these animals. Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi has introduced a bill to ban greyhound exports for commercial reasons. This bill would require people to get permission from the Minister to export greyhounds, and they must prove that it’s not for business but for companionship.
Australia’s greyhound industry groups don’t all support this bill. They suggest a simpler solution, improving the existing passport system. This would involve state groups being told about export requests by the federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF), improving control.

While the greyhound trade continues to be challenging, the results of the Senate inquiry are not known yet. What is discovered and what is done will shape the future of greyhound exports from Australia, with the aim of protecting these animals and keeping high standards.
