Embracing Integrated Leadership for a Better Future

Embracing Integrated Leadership for a Better Future

Have you heard about integrated leadership? The World Economic Forum recently shed light on a transformative approach to leadership known as “integrated leadership”. A Critical Call for Balance:

The Drive for Gender-Inclusive Leadership at COP29

Climate Crisis Exposed: Unraveling the Facts

Climate change affects us all, regardless of gender, and demands a response that reflects our diverse world.

COP29, officially known as the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is a crucial annual event in the global fight against climate change.

This year COP29 is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024. COPs are annual meetings where countries come together to discuss and negotiate actions to address climate change. COP29 plays a significant role in shaping international climate policy and agreements.

As we collectively gear up for this years COP29 climate conference, the spotlight is on not just the environmental policies being shaped, but also the need for diverse voices to guide these policies. Concern has been raised as a result of recent appointments for the COP29 leadership which have revealed a concerning gender imbalance—28 men and no women—within the Organisational Committee.

A diverse COP29 leadership is critical, ensuring that the perspectives and insights of all walks of life, especially those from traditionally underrepresented groups, are instrumental in shaping our collective climate response.

Advocacy groups such as SHE Changes Climate and the We Mean Business coalition, have urged Azerbaijan to emulate the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) approach at the previous year’s conference, COP28. The UAE notably achieved a gender-balanced delegation, with women constituting 63% of its negotiation team, setting a precedent for inclusive participation in shaping the future of climate action.

How You Can Get Involved

Are you passionate about climate change? To get involved and play your part you can:

  • Stay Informed: Follow updates on COP29 and related events to stay informed about the discussions and outcomes.

  • Join Advocacy Groups: UN Women and the Association for Women’s Rights in Development are leading organisations advocating for gender equality, including in climate governance.

  • Participate in Local Climate Action: Local initiatives can be found through platforms like the Climate Action Network, which lists member organisations by region.

  • Advocate for Change: Tools and campaigns advocating for policy changes can be accessed through organisations like the Women’s Environment and Development Organization.

  • Educate Others: Share knowledge and encourage involvement through resources from Plan International, which focuses on children’s rights and equality for girls, including in the context of climate change.

As the momentum builds towards COP29, let’s unite to demand a leadership as diverse as the communities it represents.

It’s time for action, not just intention!

Together, we can ensure that the leadership at COP29 mirrors the diverse fabric of our global society and is equipped to confront the climate challenge with the full force of our collective wisdom. The power is with YOU!

Visionaries of Hope:

The Lions Recycle for Sight Initiative

Bringing Hope Through Restored Vision

Lions Recycle for Sight Australia (SIGHT) is part of the Lions Clubs International Worldwide Eyeglass Recycling Program. With its headquarters in Queensland, SIGHT operates throughout Australia and overseas.

Since 1998 the Lions Clubs of Australia have been successfully restoring SIGHT to many millions of persons in need in Australia and adjacent countries. To date, close to 19 million pair of donated used spectacles have been refurbished and gifted back out to the community by the Lions Recycle for Sight Programme.

How It Works

Lions Clubs and other groups collect used spectacles in their local community and forward suitable pairs on for regrading and recycling to anyone in need from the Lions Recycle Centre.

Each pair of donated glasses embarks on a remarkable journey from the hands of a donor to the eyes of someone in need, symbolising a chain of care that stretches beyond borders. The programme not only restores vision but also connects communities, fostering a shared mission to uplift those who face the challenge of impaired sight.

Over the 26 years that the Australian program has operated, the program, has delivered over 9 million pairs of refurbished quality spectacles to men, women and children in need  in Africa, Europe, Middle East, Indian Sub- continent, East Asia, and the Far East, China, the countries of the Pacific Rim and Southern Asia and Oceania.

In the past 10 years several members of the Marine Branch have used their oceangoing yachts to reach and test villagers, in the remotest areas for eyesight and deliver spectacles to them.

The Lions Recycle for Sight programme stands as a testament to the power of collective action. Through the simple yet impactful act of recycling used spectacles, this initiative has brightened the lives of millions of people across the globe who otherwise would have no access to spectacles to assist their vision.

This monumental effort showcases what humanity can achieve when we unite for a common cause.

The Vanguard of Hope:

Dr. Claudine Bonder's Crusade Against Cancer

Our Superwoman Of The Hour!

Professor Claudine Bonder, expert in vascular biology at Adelaide’s Centre for Cancer Biology, has always been fascinated by how the human body works and driven by a deep wish to help people.

We had the opportunity of interviewing Professor Claudine and here’s what she had to say…

What is your current role and the primary focus of your cancer research?

“I currently lead a team of highly skilled research scientists who are dedicated to improving the outcome for patients with cancer. The primary focus of our research program is to investigate the biology by which tumours grow and metastasise (spread). This research is important because irrespective of the origin of cancer (breast, pancreas, skin), when the cancer cells spread to vital organs such as the liver, lungs and brain the survival of patients is drastically reduced. The primary focus of our research is to better understand how cancer cells use the blood circulatory system to survive and move around the body to these vital organs. Being able to stop that from happening will significantly improve the outcome for cancer patients and give them more time with their loved ones.”

By understanding how these cancers spread, she’s not just studying diseases; she’s finding ways to save lives. Her work is about more than just science; it’s a chance to make a real difference in the world, helping people from all walks of life stay healthy and happy.

Every day, Dr. Bonder sees her work as an opportunity to find a new cure for a disease that affects so many people across the globe, regardless of where they’re from or their background.

It’s this opportunity that keeps her going, pushing forward in the hope of discovering new treatments that could one day make cancer a thing of the past. Her journey is a powerful reminder of how passion and dedication can lead to meaningful changes in the world, especially when it comes to battling such a tough disease as cancer.

What inspired you to dedicate your career to cancer research, and how did you begin your journey in this field?

“For as long as I can remember I have felt a strong desire to help people and I have always been curious about human biology. The inner machinery of the human body is fascinating and when people are healthy and happy, their lives are filled with joy and accomplishment. Building our collective knowledge of cancer biology has undoubtedly saved lives. This opportunity to help people in every country and across genders and across all ethnic backgrounds is an immense privilege and that inspires me every day.”

Among your many achievements, what’s one discovery you believe has the potential to significantly alter patient care?

“Technical advances in the treatment of cancer have improved significantly over the last few years. One particular example is the generation of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells.

This cell therapy uses a patients’ own immune cells and genetically alters them such that they have improved capability to fight and destroy the cancer cells.

There have been extraordinary outcomes for patients with blood cancers (such as leukemia) but for solid tumours this has been a challenging area.

I have had the honour of working with an amazing team at Carina Biotech who aim to improve the utility of CAR T cells in solid tumours. This international collaboration conducted under a US FDA Investigational New Drug application recently dosed its first patient with metastatic colorectal cancer. Being part of this dedicated team of clinicians and scientists has the potential to change the course of many lives and I’m super proud to be able to contribute what I can to that advancement in patient care.”

How does your collaboration with the Consumer Advocacy Group influence your approach to research and treatments?

“My work with this group entails liaising with the public at large. People with lived experience of cancer provide a powerful voice to medical research. By working with consumer advocates, researchers are better equipped to identify the real needs of the community that can be addressed through research projects. Fundamentally, it is a commitment to conducting cancer research that is with the community rather than to or for the community.”

Can you share a specific instance where patient or consumer advocacy directly influenced the direction or outcome of your research?

“I would have to say with research relating to the ongoing blood tests for pancreatic cancer.

Currently, there is no good (or reliable) biomarker to indicate that someone has this deadly disease. The current marker (CA19.9) is inadequate and adds to the stress/anxiety the patients have when going for their regular check ups.

Because of this, we have deliberately added a research arm to our program to explore a novel biomarker that may be a better alternative to CA19.9. If our hypothesis is correct, we would be able to develop a simple blood test that would be more accurate and more reliable. Even more exciting is that it would be useful in rural and remote communities which would mean that people would not need to travel into the city to test for pancreatic cancer.”

Looking Ahead

As Dr. Bonder looks to the future, her vision for cancer research is clear: to continue pushing the boundaries of understanding and treatment, aiming to leave a legacy of innovation and compassion. Her work not only advances scientific knowledge but also brings a message of hope to patients and their families worldwide.

Charting the Course for a Sustainable Food Future:

The GMO Banana Controversy

Genetically Modified Bananas Approved: What It Means for the Consumer

The first GMO banana has been approved for human consumption in Australia and New Zealand.

This recent green light from Food Standards Australia & New Zealand (FSANZ) for the consumption of genetically modified (GMO) bananas has sparked a significant dialogue about the future of our food.

As champions of sustainability and informed decision-making, it’s crucial we examine its implications for health, the environment, and our rights as consumers.

The Facts

These GMO bananas are engineered to be more resistant to the Panama disease tropical race 4 (TR4), a soil borne disease that can decimate banana crops.

Good right?

Well, when it comes to human safety maybe not. You see these GMO bananas are being pushed through with
no safety tests for human consumption.

That’s right – zero testing!!

Not a single person has ever eaten one, and yet they’ve decided that they’re safe enough for all of us to eat.

How did they come to this decision? With something called the theory of ‘substantial equivalence’.

FSANZ does its own safety assessment to make sure that the new GMO version is similar enough to the non GMO version. Because the non GMO version is already being consumed, if the GMO version is similar enough, by default it is considered ‘safe’!

According to FSANZA…

“The goal of the safety assessment is not to establish the absolute safety of the GM food…but rather to consider whether the GM food is comparable to the conventional counterpart food.”

Basically this ‘safety assessment’ is a non-tested assumption.

There’s been no determination as to whether it’s safe for human consumption at all. and yet, these bananas are considered safe enough to be grown and fed to humans.

Evidence shows that the process of genetic modification is imprecise and unpredictable and can lead to unintended changes, allergens and toxins being produced.

We also know that studies show animals fed GMOs experience damage and inflammation to their digestive system.

How can any organisation say something is safe without actually testing it?

Diving Deeper into the Concerns

  • Health and Safety Concerns: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals whose genetic material has been altered in a way that doesn’t occur naturally. Essentially this new type of banana will be hitting our supermarket and grocery stores shelves without thorough safety checks. It raises questions about how safe they are for us to eat. We need to make sure these bananas won’t cause any unexpected health issues.

  • Environmental Impact: These bananas are designed to fight off diseases that threaten banana crops. But, we also need to think about how growing them could affect the environment. For example, the GMO bananas might spread their modified genes to other plants, affecting their natural diversity. They could also impact the health of the soil by changing the balance of nutrients. These potential effects call for a more cautious approach to using GMOs in agriculture.

  • Transparency Issue: Picture buying bananas at your local store and not knowing if they’re genetically modified. The current rules say that as long as the GMO content is less than 1%, companies don’t have to tell us. This lack of labelling requirements makes it hard for us to know what we’re eating and make informed choices about our food.

The Real Threat

While TR4 poses a serious threat to the banana industry, it makes sense to take steps to protect against it. However, it’s important to consider that soil-borne diseases like TR4 are more problematic in monoculture environments, which is how most bananas in Australia are grown.

Monoculture growing involves growing a single species of crop, like bananas, over a large area repeatedly. This practice leads to a lack of diversity, a constant presence of the same crop, and poor soil health. These factors contribute to an increase in soil-borne diseases in monoculture settings.

It’s ironic that while efforts are being made to protect the environment with GMOs, the monoculture practice used in banana farming may actually worsen the disease they’re trying to combat.

Will GMO Bananas At Least Be Labelled?

Probably not! So its likely that you will never even know you’re eating them.

According to the labelling laws in Australia and New Zealand, if GMO ingredients make up less than 1% of a product, that product does NOT have to be labelled.

And if GMOs are intended for immediate consumption, they also do NOT have to be labelled.

This means any supermarket, restaurant, cafe, takeaway, food truck, vending machine & catering can serve GMOs without telling you.

Your Immediate Action Is Needed!

  1. Write to your local minister: You have about 20 days to raise concerns about the lack of safety data and proper testing with your local food ministers. If you’re interested in doing so you can find your local food minister here. To make it super easy we have also prepared a template email (see below) that you can simply copy and paste into an email to your local minister.

  2. Grow your own if you can. Don’t know where to start? The Healthy Patch is an excellent resource to get your started. Click here for all details.

  3. Source from farmers markets: buy your fruit and vegetables from your local farmers markets and check with the stall owners that their produce is either organic or at least pesticide free.

What are your thoughts on this new GMO banana?

Would you eat it?

[Date]

The Honourable [Minister’s Name] Minister for Agriculture [Minister’s Office Address] [City, State, Postcode]

Dear Minister [Minister’s Last Name],

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the recent approval of genetically modified (GMO) bananas for human consumption by Food Standards Australia & New Zealand (FSANZ). As a constituent and a concerned citizen, I believe it is crucial to address the potential risks and implications of introducing GMO bananas into the Australian market.

The approval of GMO bananas raises several issues that need to be addressed:

  1. Lack of Safety Testing: Despite the approval, no safety tests have been conducted on GMO bananas. This raises serious questions about the safety of these bananas for human consumption. It is essential to prioritise the health and well-being of consumers by ensuring that GMO foods undergo rigorous safety testing before being approved for sale.

  2. Environmental Impact: GMO bananas, engineered to be resistant to the Panama disease tropical race 4 (TR4), may have unintended consequences for the environment. The cultivation of GMO bananas in monoculture environments could exacerbate soil-borne diseases and lead to long-term environmental damage. It is essential to consider the broader environmental impact of introducing GMO bananas into our ecosystem.

  3. Labelling and Transparency: Current labelling laws in Australia and New Zealand do not require products with GMO ingredients comprising less than 1% to be labelled. This lack of transparency means that consumers may unknowingly consume GMO bananas. It is crucial to advocate for clear labelling of GMO foods to enable consumers to make informed choices about the food they eat.

I urge you to reconsider the approval of GMO bananas and prioritise the safety and well-being of Australian consumers. I also urge you to advocate for clear labelling of GMO foods to ensure transparency and consumer choice.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I look forward to your response and action on this issue.

Sincerely,

A Holistic Approach to Animal Welfare and Community Safety

Highlighting A Brand new Initiative To Alleviate Animal Suffering

In the heart of Vellore, South India, a new initiative the Small Animals Protection Program is leading a compassionate charge against the increasing stray dog population, which poses significant challenges to public health, environmental balance, and animal welfare.

Guardians of the Environment

The Small Animals Protection Program (SAPP) initiative is not just about alleviating animal suffering; it’s about creating a harmonious coexistence that benefits the entire community and local ecosystems.

In Vellore, South India, the number of stray dogs has been steadily increasing year after year. Street dogs are suffering unnecessarily and SAPP are out to to lead by example.

This new initiative is aimed at ensuring a reduction of dogs through birth control and a reduction of suffering through feeding and providing water for the dogs.

Says the team at SAPP…
“We’re on a mission to make life better for these street dogs. One big part of that is giving them rabies vaccinations. It’s not just about their health; it’s about making the whole area safer for everyone.

And it’s not just the dogs we’re looking out for. We’re also thinking about the Siddha Medicinal Forest, a special place full of medicinal plants and wildlife. The growing number of stray dogs is throwing things off balance, affecting plants and animals alike.

That’s why we’re working hard to protect the forest’s biodiversity. Our goal is to make sure everyone – humans, animals, and plants – can live together in harmony.”

Alleviating Suffering Through Advocacy and Action

The Small Animals Protection Program’s comprehensive strategy also includes targeted birth control measures to manage the dog population sustainably, alongside ongoing care initiatives such as feeding and hydration stations.

These efforts encompass a broader commitment to ethical animal management and environmental stewardship, setting a precedent for community-led conservation.

What Needs To Be Done

SAPP are just getting started. They need vital funding, equipment, a mobile clinic and a resident vet to get this project off the ground. This is where you come in!

How You Can Get Involved

The program’s success hinges on the support of you, the community.

Donations, both monthly and annual, are vital for expanding these initiatives, enabling more robust planning and a broader impact.

Contributions are tax-deductible for US residents, with donors encouraged to specify ‘SMALL ANIMALS’ in their donation message to direct funds appropriately.

Join the Movement

  • Individual Support: You can make a huge difference to the lives of these animals by becoming a treasured member of this charitable project and making a regular donation. Small regular donations are much more effective than one off donations. Click on the link below to register your support.
